Abstract

The purpose of the subject metodología de la investigación (research methodology) is to inquire, know and collect information about an administration guru. We chose Elton Mayo because his contribution has a high importance in administration. Nowadays, it is unknown if his contributions are important for companies, so we decided to figure out if the future business men, students from 7° semester to 9° semester, know about the importance of this character.

A monographic study is going to be made about Elton Mayo’s life, work and transcendence will be collected. As our general objective we want to know if the students we mentioned before know about Elton Mayo’s theory. We also have specific objectives such as making a field research, show the results in a final presentation and in a blog where we will publish all the information.

Thanks to this research, people will be able to consult Elton Mayo’s life, work and transcendence all in one document with a quick access. The research will be held inside the UPAEP during the autumn 2010 period, and a problem we face is to know if the surveys are answered sincerely. It will have a descriptive and explanatory scope, because his story is described based on the survey results.

George Elton Mayo, industrial psychologist and social theorist, was born on December 26th, 1880 in Adelaide, Australia. In 1897 he entered the University of Adelaide and finally to the University of Edinburgh where he tried three times to study medicine, he discovered it was not really in the right track, in 1907 he rejoined the University of Adelaide, where he studied philosophy and psychology . He graduated as a distinguished professor in mental and moral philosophy at the University of Queensland. On April 18, 1913 in Brisbane he had married Dorothea McConnel.

Harvard School named him an associate professor in 1926 and professor of industrial research in 1929. There he joined the research and designed the personal and social factors that determine the production of work in the Western Electric Co.’s plant in Chicago, this famous Hawthorne experiments were pioneer studies in modern social research. Elton Mayo was one of the most influential and controversial, social scientists of his time.

During the field research, an hypothesis was formulated; "Most students in 7th, 8th and 9th are aware of who Elton Mayo was and the contributions he made with his experiments." The universe is composed of 49 subjects (students 7, 8 and 9th semester), the survey was applied to a representative sample of 30 students.

Before applying the surveys, we needed to find research subjects, first we resorted to the coordinator of the Business Administration Degree, Professor Neria Elizabeth Peña, thanks to her we could contact for the right students, on the other hand, we got the support of Elizabeth Briseño Sánchez who is responsible for the Business School (Professional Screening Programme) were we obtained the different schedules of more students, finally, we found some students in the cafeteria.Escuchar

During the field investigation we had some problems: our universe was very small, there were not enough surveys to gather a representative sample had to find meeting points for students in recent semesters, which was a bit complicated. The hypothesis was accepted based on the results of field research and general and specific objectives were met throughout the entire investigation.
